Science

Science is mandatory for all students from Year 7 to Year 10.

Science 7-10 provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real-world problems. Science emphasises the skills for working scientifically, as well as critical and creative thinking to address scientific issues.

In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from different science disciplines, including:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth and Environmental Science
  • Investigating Science
  • Physics.

In Year 12, students who are studying at least one other science subject may also choose to study Science Extension.

The science faculty of Kogarah High School prides itself on providing opportunity for all students to achieve academic success in this subject. Many students achieve at the highest level in both the School Certificate and Higher School Certificate examinations.

Teachers in the Science Faculty have high expectations of their students, and enjoy seeing each student's success.

Faculty aims/objectives

  • Students will reach their potential whilst enjoying learning about Science and seeing its relevance in our world students will develop skills in planning and conducting investigations
  • Students will develop skills in communicating information
  • Students will develop skills in scientific thinking and problem-solving techniques
  • Students will develop skills in working co-operatively

Faculty structure

  • Year 7 & 8 students remain in the same class for all subjects.
  • Year 9 & 10 classes are graded by their Science ability.
  • Years 11 & 12 Kogarah High School offers Biology, Chemistry, Engineering Studies, Physics and Senior Science 

Student requirements

  • Pens (blue/black, red) Pencil & eraser Ruler
  • BOS approved scientific calculator (CASIO preferred & can be purchased at the school office)
  • Geometry Set
  • Diary
  • Gluestick
  • A BYOD laptop is preferable from Year 9 to Year 12

Extracurricular activities

The school offers entry in the International Science Competition. Some classes are nominated to participate in classes conducted by Sydney University Engineering students. Targeted junior students are invited to enter the Science and Engineering Challenge
