Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10. 

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:

  • Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Standard 2
  • Mathematics Standard 1 (Optional HSC examination)
  • Mathematics Life Skills.

The mathematics faculty of Kogarah High School prides itself on providing opportunity for all students to achieve academic success in this subject.

Many students achieve at the highest level in both the record of school achievement and Higher School Certificate (HSC) examinations. Teachers in the mathematics faculty have high expectations of their students, and enjoy seeing each student's success. 

Faculty aims/objectives

  • Students to reach their potential whilst enjoying learning about mathematics and seeing its relevance in our world
  • Students to be challenged by the work presented to them
  • Students to be able to understand the numeracy demands of all of their subjects
  • Students develop their problem solving skills

Faculty structure

  • Year 7 & 8 students remain in the same class for all subjects.
  • Year 9 & 10 classes are graded by their mathematics ability.
  • Years 9 & 10 may follow the 5.1, 5.2 or 5.3 (top) course, depending on their class, or their individual program.  
  • Years 11 & 12
    • Kogarah High School offers Mathematics  Extension (1 Unit), Mathematics Advanced (2 unit), Mathematics Standard (2 unit)
    • Mathematics Extension 2 in year 12 

Extracurricular activities

The Mathematics faculty offers students extra assistance during break 1 every Thursday. They are able to ask for help from a Mathematics teacher or from their peers.
