Standards for the 21st Century Learner: Common beliefs

The KHS Library is a vibrant and popular hub at Kogarah High School. Students in all years are welcome to come to the library to use the facilities and resources for study and recreation.

Resources

The school library provides a range of resources to support learning and to encourage recreational reading in the school. The library has a broad non-fiction collection for student research with a range of study guides and topical magazines. The fiction section has books for both junior and senior students and includes a section of graded books for students progressing through all levels of reading literacy. All collections are regularly updated. Students can access the Oliver catalogue from home to find books in the library and to check their loans.  The library also promotes the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Borrowing Books

  • The borrowing limit for students in Years 7 to 10 is 4 books.
  • In years 11 and 12 the borrowing limit is increased to 10 books.
  • The loan period for both is 2 weeks.

Digital Resources

Students and staff can access a range of digital resources from the library's online Oliver catalogue such as the eBook collection and digital resources such as Encyclopaedia Britannica Online, Issues in Society and the ClickView video platform. eBooks on the SORA app

The KHS library’s eBook collection is also available through the SORA app. Instructions for downloading and using the app are available from the front page of the library catalogue.

Facilities

The library has computers available to students to access the internet for research, to complete their assignments and to search for library books in the online catalogue.

Students have access to photocopying and a colour laser printer. The library has Wi-Fi and a charging trolley for school laptops and BYOD digital devices. There is also a television, (tuned to ABC 24hour news with the volume down and subtitles on) and a variety of games, including chess and dominoes.

The Mezzanine Level study area is for year 12 students only.

All KHS and IEC students are welcome in the library during recess and lunchtime to do school work, to print out assignments, borrow or read books, to play chess or to meet and make friends. 

Opening hours

  • Open 8.15am each day
  • Recess every day except Monday
  • Lunchtime every day except Wednesday
  • After School Homework Centre from 2.45 to 4.30 Monday
